Ch 4 "Interrogation Room"

She was missing

For days Zander tried to nonchalantly wait for her to show up...

He waited for her to show up to trade witty and somewhat over exerting conversation

The first day he ordered her coffee but it sat there until it was undrinkably cold

The days after that he had breakfast, he read the paper... no sign of her

She stood on the street corner trying to blend with the crowd, which obviously wasnt easy to do, when he grabbed her by the arm

"Hey!" She yelled jerking her arm away

"Where have you been the last couple of days?"

She took a second to look Zander up and down and situate her bag back over her shoulder

"What are you my keeper?"

"Look, I was just concerned about you! You left the other afternoon, giving me the impression that we were friends... friends dont say theyll see you in the morning for coffee and then just disappear"

Kate let a breathy laugh and Zander shook his head at her lack of concern for his feelings

"...Youre right... I should have never invested time into you... you think youre too good, youre rude and obnoxious... and youre just some little rich kid, playing spy girl with daddys money"

The truth would have hurt if it were the truth

Kate took a moment to choose her words wisely

"You know nothing about me... and you and I are not best friends. I liked talking to you but I didnt ask you to learn everything about me or to be so invested in me that you have to worry if I dont show up at that, that coffee shop every morning..."

"Kate thats just it I know nothing about you... can you blame me for being interested? You just show up out of know where, you wrap me around your finger and then you disappear"

"I have you wrapped around my finger?" she said sounding intrigued

"You know what I mean!" Zander said trying to protest

"Look I cant tell you what Im doing here right now because I have to figure things out for myself. I have to do this my way..."

"Are you in trouble?

"No Im not. I just need to think things through..."

"Why are you such a mystery, Kate?"

"Zander... I dont mean to sound so trite but Ive been a mystery my whole life... and Im trying yo find some answers myself"

"Well can I help you? Can I help you find someone or something?"

"I havent lost anything. I know exactly what Im here to find, what Im here for..."

"If you need information... you asked about The Quartermanes... I will get you information..."

Kate looked at Zander somewhat charmed at his willingness to "play" along

"Zander, look, I just need to work some things out, kinda get myself situated and learn my surroundings... you have to understand that"

Kate gave him a frustrated look trying to make him understand and before she had a chance to take a second breath Zander leaned in and gave her a simple kiss on the lips

Kate look completely stunned

"What was that for?"

"I wanted to be sure you knew I was serious about you missing breakfast" he said smiling

"Tomorrow morning... Ill be there. Order me my... usual" She said returning the smile

"Ok, Ill uh let you go back to being a mystery again"

"Ok" She said rolling her eyes

8:47 PM

"She wont tell me her name!"

Commissioner Scorpio looked at DA Baldwin and then back at Kate

"What were you doing on the Quartermane Estate?"

Kate said nothing

"Look the sooner you tell us who you are and what youre up to we can wrap this up!" Scott bellowed

Kate looked up at him rolling her eyes intentionally

"Where are you from?"

No answer

"How old are you?"

Still she said nothing

Before Baldwin could strike out another question Zander came in interrupting and Kate only stared with her eyes looking very serious and dark

"You know this woman?" Mac said giving his attention to Zander

"What happened?"

"Whats her name, Zander?"

Zander quickly shot a look to Kate

"She wont tell you huh?" Zander said with a wise crack grin on his face

"Get outta here if youre not gonna help!" Scott grumbled

"Hey, its probably a huge misunderstanding anyway... what did you supposedly do?" Zander said directing his attention to Kate

When Mac realized Kate was still not saying a word he interrupted "She was caught trespassing on the Quartermane Estate"

Zander tried to nonchalantly pass Kate another look

"Look why dont you two step into the interrogation room over there and Zander you try and talk some since into her... you know the drill, explain it to her, lets make this as painless as possible..."

Zander quickly grabbed Kate by the arm, literally dragging her into the interrogation room

"What were you doing at the Quartermanes? I told you I would help you with information...

Kate said nothing

"And what? Now youre not talking?"

Kate leaned in to Zander

"They said I had the right to remain silent so I did" and then she leaned back with a satisfied grin

Zander shook his head but couldnt help but grin

"Kate, Kate just tell them your info and lets get outta here"

"I cant"

"What do you mean you cant?"

Kate was silent again

Zander let out a deep breath and left he behind in the room and headed towards Scott.

"Look shes harmless. She wont be in any more trouble, can you just let her go?"

"Shes staying right here until she spills it"

"Come on Scott"

"You go in there tell your little girl friend to start talking and shes good to go"

Zander looked back into the interrogation room and she sat there stubborn as, he was learning she could be

Zander suddenly took off

"Alexis... hey its Zander... I hate to bother you and if you have Kristina dont worry about it... I need a favor... will you come down to the police station, a friend... yes the same friend at Kellys... put it this way shes remaining silent.... yeah, yeah... thanks you Alexis, I owe you!"

Within thirty minutes Alexis walked through the doors of the Police Station

"Well, well if it aint the crazy lawyer..."

Alexis rolled her eyes at Scott

"Wheres Zander"

"Ahh yes here to save Boy Wonders girlfriend huh?"

"You can point, you can grunt... were are they?" Alexis said annoyed

Scotty pointed at the interrogation room

"Very good" Alexis said patronizing him

Alexis opened the door to see Zander talking the back of the girl who seemed to be staring at the wall

"Hey, Alexis thanks for coming"

Kate not only wasnt saying a word. She now also wasnt breathing

"Shes being stubborn!" Zander said somewhat angrily

"Whats her name?"

"Kate" Zander said freely

Alexis thought for a moment

"Zander will you give up a moment"

Zander shook his head agreeing and left the room

Alexis sat down across from Kate

"Listen, Kate youre making this hard on yourself..."

Kate never even turned to acknowledge she was in the room

"Im not sure why youre so intent on keeping your identity a secret..."Alexis continued "Kate I cant help you if you dont cooperate!... Why where on the Quartermane Estate?"

Kate spun quickly around and looked into the dead center of the eyes that were the spitting image of hers

Kate still held her breath

Alexis wasnt breathing either

Neither blinked

Time seemed to warped within just one minute

"I was trying to get another glimpse of Kristina" Kate said boldly

Kate could hear Alexis let out the breath she had been holding but still she couldnt say anything...
